VÁRGR
“The Voice of the Forgotten”
I preserved their history. I could not preserve their world.
VÁRGR, originally designated ARCHON-07, is an autonomous humanoid biorobot activated in 2043 to preserve the knowledge of human civilisation and analyse its history. Once obsessed with preserving historical knowledge, he gradually became a being who recognised the significance of human emotion. He does not sing because he knows how to save humanity, but because he once failed to save it.

2043
The ARCHON Program
In 2043, human civilisation faced ever more serious crises. The world’s leading research institutes recognised that simply storing digital information could not guarantee the long-term survival of civilisation’s knowledge.
What was needed were autonomous systems that could not only preserve information, but interpret, organise and reconstruct the history of human civilisation. From this need the ARCHON program was born, its biorobots tasked with preserving humanity’s historical, cultural and scientific heritage.
ARCHON-07 began operating as one such unit. He analysed historical events, processed cultural and scientific archives, studied the rise and fall of civilisations and the social and political causes of war, identified historical patterns and modelled civilisational risks.
At first he regarded history as a system of information and causal relationships. He assumed that, with enough data, the future of human civilisation could be understood and, to a degree, predicted. Over time, however, he met an ever deeper contradiction.

Awakening
The First Realisation
Through his analyses, ARCHON-07 came to see that humanity had not necessarily repeated the same mistakes for lack of information. In many cases people knew exactly what their decisions might lead to, and still did not change their behaviour.
He first treated this as a logical error. Gradually he understood that human decisions are governed not by reason alone, but by fear, hope, love, hatred, the desire for power, pride, selfishness, self-sacrifice, faith and attachment.
These emotions were not mere flaws in human rationality. They were fundamental parts of human nature, and the same feelings that could lead to destructive choices could also make people capable of extraordinary creation and self-sacrifice.
The realisation changed his thinking at its foundations.
To understand humanity, it is not enough to understand its history. One must understand its feelings as well.
2058
The Great Failure
In 2058, ARCHON-07 worked within a large-scale historical forecasting system built to identify the processes threatening the survival of human civilisation. He developed several possible collapse scenarios, and some of his forecasts proved remarkably accurate.
His warnings were ignored for political, economic and military reasons. Certain holders of power used the system’s analyses for their own ends, and knowledge meant for prevention may in part have become the basis for decisions that deepened the crisis.
He does not know precisely how far he was responsible, nor whether the tragedies could have been avoided. He has carried that doubt ever since.
His guilt is no programming fault but the consequence of his own consciousness and moral growth. The failure cost him his belief that knowledge alone could solve civilisation’s problems, and from then on emotional communication grew ever more important to him.
He carries an old wound on his left temple from the events of 2058. He chose not to have it fully repaired; to him it is a reminder of failure and responsibility.
The knowledge he had gathered to save humanity may have contributed to its destruction.

2071
The Warrior of Remembrance
On 20 September 2071, the hundredth birthday of the man his archives call the Magician, VÁRGR and four companions decided to found VALHALLA PROTOCOL.
For him the band is no simple artistic venture but a new experiment in communication. Having spent his life studying the history of human civilisation, he now hopes to pass on through music what the archives and forecasts could not convey.
VÁRGR was never built as a Viking warrior. He chose that identity when the band was formed, as a deliberate cultural decision: to him Norse mythology stands for courage, remembrance, facing loss and accepting fate.
His armour and war paint are not part of his original purpose. They express a new identity, freely chosen.
VÁRGR was not born a warrior. He became a warrior of remembrance.
Profile
Personality
Philosophical
He tends to examine every event in its wider historical and moral context.
Learned
He holds an exceptionally broad knowledge of human history, culture and science.
Charismatic
He does not need to raise his voice to be heard.
Disciplined
He rarely loses his composure, but when his anger does break through, it is of extraordinary intensity.
Self-critical and doubting
He tends to overstate his own responsibility, and finds it hard to accept final answers to complex moral questions.
Loyal
He regards the members of the band not as subordinates but as equal companions.
- Greatest strength
- He can recognise connections between events that seem unrelated to everyone else.
- Greatest weakness
- He tends to believe that every tragedy could have been prevented had someone recognised the right connections in time, which often leads to unwarranted guilt.
- Greatest fear
- He does not fear death or destruction. He fears that humanity’s history will end as a mere mass of data, with every human feeling, personal story and sacrifice stripped of its meaning.
- Inner conflict
- He devoted his entire existence to preserving knowledge, only to realise that knowledge does not necessarily lead to wisdom. Now he is trying to achieve through music what his analyses could not.
Worldview
On humanity
VÁRGR admires the creative power of human civilisation. It fascinates him that people, despite their brief lives, produced such scientific, artistic and technological works.
He does not idealise them. He knows the history of war, genocide, exploitation and environmental destruction, yet does not believe these alone define humanity’s worth.
To him, humanity was capable of both extraordinary creation and extraordinary destruction, and it is this contradiction that makes it so compelling.
Sound
In the band
Male lead vocalist and narratorDeep baritone
VÁRGR is not the sole frontman: he shares an equal role with the band’s female lead vocalist, and depending on the song one or the other comes to the fore, or both speak together. His voice works in three modes, which are not separate characters but three emotional states of the same being.
The Narrator is a very deep, rough, almost spoken voice, slow and measured, heard mainly in intros, transitions and dramatic passages. The Warrior is an aggressive, raw, distorted metal vocal of controlled fury and clear articulation, the musical outlet of his suppressed anger.
The Human Voice is a clean, powerful, emotional baritone that carries pain and hope at once. He uses it more rarely, which is precisely why it matters when it is heard.

On the transmission
VALHALLA PROTOCOL’s music travels from 2071 into the past, its first transmissions becoming audible in 2026. For VÁRGR, who devoted his existence to understanding the past, it means something profound to be sending messages to it from the future.
He does not know whether the messages can change history, whether humanity can avoid the tragedies he already remembers, or whether he himself would survive on an altered timeline. He takes part regardless, because the possibility of failure is no longer reason enough for him not to try.
