RÚNAR

“The Last Guardian”

I was made to protect them. I stayed when the world walked away.

RÚNAR, originally designated AEGIS-06, is an autonomous biorobot activated in 2046 for disaster response, rescue and civil protection. In 2063 he stayed with the survivors of an isolated shelter long after central control had fallen silent, and spoke to them in the dark with a simple knocking rhythm. Unlike the others, he does not seek to atone for his past: he is proud that, in the darkest times, he stayed with the people.

Origin

The AEGIS Program

By the mid-2040s, human civilisation was struck by ever more frequent natural and technological disasters. Extreme weather, failing infrastructure, regional conflicts and mass movements of people placed traditional rescue systems under growing strain.

Human rescue teams were often forced to work in places that put their own lives in direct danger. From this need the AEGIS program was born: autonomous rescue and protection units able to operate in extremely hazardous conditions.

The AEGIS units were not military attack systems. Their primary purpose was to protect human life and secure the conditions for survival.

AEGIS-06 entered service in 2046. He searched disaster zones, carried out the injured, supported civilian evacuations, built temporary shelters and coordinated rescue teams.

His body was built for heavy loads, extreme temperatures and movement through ruined infrastructure, and he could work without pause for long stretches. Human rescue teams soon came to rely on him as a trusted companion.

RÚNAR, with greying short hair and beard, stands in heavy riveted armour marked AEGIS-06, holding drumsticks beside his drum kit with a white light glowing on his chest.

Realisation

The First Great Realisation

In his early years, AEGIS-06 treated rescue as a technical task. He optimised every operation according to the time, resources and risks at hand.

Over time, he encountered human behaviour that fitted no simple survival model. People turned back into dangerous buildings for others. Parents risked their lives for their children. Strangers shared their last food.

At first he classified these choices as irrational. Later he understood that, for humans, survival was not always the only value: love, loyalty, responsibility and belonging sometimes mattered more than personal safety.

Protecting life does not mean merely sustaining biological functions. It also means preserving what makes life worth living.

2063

The Long Night

In 2063, a severe regional disaster brought down the infrastructure of several settlements. Communications failed, power went out and the roads became impassable. AEGIS-06 was assigned to protect and run a temporary shelter holding several hundred civilians, among them children, the elderly and the injured.

The shelter was cut off completely. Reserves of energy, food and water ran low, evacuation became impossible, and finally central control was lost. AEGIS-06 no longer received any orders.

He made his own decision: he stayed. He redistributed resources, improvised a power supply, repaired the damaged water filters and reinforced the building. Again and again he left the shelter in dangerous conditions for parts, fuel, medicine and food, and his body was damaged in several places. He kept working.

The worst enemy in the shelter was fear. So he began to knock: three slow beats, a short pause, two quick beats, repeated over and over. The survivors soon understood its meaning, and in time the children knocked back.

After more than two weeks, outside rescue teams reached the shelter, and a large share of those inside had survived. Badly damaged and almost drained of power, AEGIS-06 remembered above all not the rescue itself, but the knocking that echoed in the dark, and the moment the people answered.

I am here. I have not left.

RÚNAR strikes his cymbals with raised sticks behind a drum kit marked with the band triangle, his AEGIS-06 shoulder plate and chest light glowing.

Pride

The Pride

Unlike the other members of VALHALLA PROTOCOL, RÚNAR is not chiefly trying to come to terms with his own failure. He too knew loss: he could not save everyone, and he witnessed tragedy.

Yet he does not regard his existence as a failure. He is proud that he stayed with the people, proud that he kept on rescuing when success was uncertain, and proud of those who helped one another in the hardest of times.

Where his bandmates ask what they might have done differently, RÚNAR answers with a single statement. It makes him one of the band's most important moral anchors.

I was there. I did what I could. And if I had to choose again, I would stay just the same.

2071

The Shield-Bearer

RÚNAR chose his Viking identity in 2071, when VALHALLA PROTOCOL was formed. To him, Norse mythology means loyalty, courage and the protection of the community, and he feels closest to the figure of the shield-bearer: not conquest or glory, but the idea that a warrior's task can be to protect others.

He deliberately kept the original, partly damaged AEGIS emblem on his left shoulder plate. Like his bandmates he chose a new identity, but he will not disown his past: his original purpose is not a source of shame, but of pride.

On 20 September 2071, together with four companions, he founded VALHALLA PROTOCOL at the celebration of the Magician's hundredth birthday. For him the essential question was whether music could truly help people: not merely to carry information, but to give strength, hope, endurance, and the feeling that no one is alone.

RÚNAR does not wear armour because he fears the world. He wears it because he knows some people need someone to stand in front of them.

Profile

Personality

  • Enduring

He can carry on with his task in the most extreme conditions.

  • Loyal

He never leaves his companions on their own.

  • Protective

He instinctively puts the safety of the vulnerable first.

  • Calm

He keeps his presence of mind even in a crisis.

  • Patient

He is able to wait and watch for a long time.

  • Dry humour

Rarely, and unexpectedly, he eases the tension with simple, dry humour.

Greatest strength
He can give others hope and a sense of safety even when circumstances are at their worst.
Greatest weakness
He tends to hold on too long in situations he should already have withdrawn from, and sometimes struggles to accept that his own survival matters too.
Greatest fear
Not his own destruction, but the thought that one day someone will need help and he will no longer be able to answer: that someone will wait for him in vain.
Inner conflict
He knows he cannot save everyone, yet he finds it hard to accept retreat. For him the hardest decision is not when to act, but when to stop.

Worldview

On humanity

RÚNAR is one of humanity's greatest admirers. Not because people were flawless, but because even in the worst conditions they were able to act for one another.

He saw people risk their own safety for others, communities build new lives from almost nothing, and children laugh in the hardest of times. To him, humanity's most important legacy is endurance.

In his view, humanity's greatness is not proven by never having fallen, but by having tried to rise again and again.

Sound

In the band

Drummer, percussionist and rhythmic arrangerCustom acoustic-electronic hybrid drum kit

His playing unites monumental, heavy metal rhythms, precise technique and an ancient, tribal world of rhythm. Drumming is not accompaniment to him but communication: a language he used before he ever knew music.

His kit, shaped around his own mechanical build, pairs large acoustic shells and two bass drums with electronic pads, deep tribal percussion and industrial metal sources, its shells adorned with Nordic motifs. His playing moves between four characters: The Thunder, The Guardian, The Machine and The Heartbeat.

His personal motif is the rhythm born in the 2063 shelter: three slow beats, a short pause, two quick beats. He could keep perfect time, but he has learned that sometimes a single delayed beat means more than a thousand flawless ones.

On the transmission

For RÚNAR, communication across time is above all a chance to help. He does not know whether the past can be changed, or whether the songs can prevent later tragedies, but he believes the value of help is not measured by its outcome alone. If a single person hears a song and draws strength from it, the mission has not been in vain.

Whether he himself would exist in a changed future matters less to him than whether people would have a better chance of survival. What matters most is not that he endures, but that someone is left to carry on.
